EXHIBITION: Second Life of Venus

25 April–30 November 2025

In 2025 we are celebrating a century since the discovery of the Venus of Dolní Věstonice – the most important archaeological discovery every made in our country. This figurine from the age of the mammoth hunters, discovered in the Moravian village of the same name, has become not just an icon of prehistoric culture, but also a significant symbol of motherhood, womanhood, beauty, and fertility. Her image has taken hold all over the world, in fine art and design, as well as in popular culture, where she appears as a motif in advertising, on posters, in films, in music, in literature, and even in commercial products that today anyone can buy.

The exhibition Second Life of Venus is divided into two parts. The first is being held at Archeopark Pavlov, where – beside the museum’s other attractions – we will introduce you to the familiar tale of the Venus of Dolní Věstonice using an innovative comics-style approach, while injecting new life into the exhibition with other interactive elements. The second part of the exhibition, focused on art and design, can be seen at Mikulov Castle. Both sites will be open to visitors from 25 April until 30 November 2025. Come explore the fascinating story of the Venus and her influence on culture and society over the course of the last century.

The exhibition has been curated by Mgr. Martina Galetová, Ph. D. from the Moravian Museum in Brno. The exhibition was created as part of the Secret Places project of the South Moravian Region, organised in collaboration with the Moravian Museum in Brno.
