10.6 Venus of Willendorf

This female figurine, discovered by Austrian archaeologist Josef Szombathy in 1908, represents the classic stylization of a mature, heavily obese woman.

Material: stone – oolitic limestone

Dimensions (height): 105 mm

Exhibit type: copy of original (plaster)

Archaeological site: Willendorf, Wachau, Lower Austria

Collection: Natural History Museum, Vienna, Austria

It is symmetrically carved as a composition of oval forms, with powerful hips, large breasts and a head bearing the marks of a particular hairstyle or head covering. On the surface of the statue we find traces of red pigment. The figurine was made from oolitic limestone which may have come from Moravia – it is similar to the raw material found at the Stránská skála location in Brno.
