10.7 Venus of Moravany

The torso of a female figure carved from ivory, referred to as the Moravany or “White” Venus.

Material: mammoth ivory

Dimensions (height): 75 mm

Exhibit type: copy of original (plaster)

Archaeological site: Moravany nad Váhom, Slovakia

Collection: Institute of Archaeology of the SAS, Slovakia

The statue was ploughed up by accident in 1930s in a field near Moravany nad Váhom (records as to the precise location and year of the find vary) and subsequently went missing for many years. It was not returned to Slovakia until 1968. The side view offers us the strikingly oblique line of the waist, which appears to divide the carving into two parts.
