7.1 Mammoth bone midden

Segment of a mammoth bone midden, conserved in situ and directly integrated into the Archeopark exhibition space.

Exhibit type: original

Archaeological site: Pavlov I (Pavlov near Dolní Věstonice, Moravia)

This midden was discovered on the north-west edge of the site during the rescue excavation in 2014 that preceded construction of the museum. Here we can see loosely deposited skeletal fragments of several mammoth individuals, the ribs, pelvises, scapulae, limb bones and from the skull, molars and tusks. It is likely that these bones represent the vestiges of hunted animals, which for reasons of space and hygiene accumulated aside from the main settled areas. Besides mammoth, we find here other animal species – horse, wolf and reindeer –as well as stone fragments, artefacts and also a smattering of fireplaces, deformed by the effects of frost.
